Pilot Tour: El Centro de Oro

On the bright, sunny morning of March 30th, the tour set out from the Lilian Marrero Library, led by Marilyin, our resident tour guide and Director of Education at Taller Puertorriqueño.

Making a left turn, the tour arrived at El Bloque de Oro (The Golden Block), where Harry, Director of Operations at HACE, gave a lesson in the history of the famous commercial corridor.

5th street is home a bustling corridor of shops and restaurants collectively called “El Bloque de Oro”

The tour proceeded to visit several iconic shops on the Golden Block, including pastry shops, cleaners, and record stores. The tour emphasized the importance of supporting local business to maintain neighborhood vitality.

The tour headed to Fairhill Square, one of the many public parks dotting the neighborhood, and then made its final stop at Taller Puertorriqueño.

Fairhill Square, located at the corner of 4th Street and Lehigh Ave, is the physical center of the neighborhood.

At Taller, we enjoyed a delicious meal from a local restaurant. Tour-goers also learned about initiatives implemented by community-based organizations in Eastern North Philadelphia to strengthen their neighborhood. They received a brief training on canvassing techniques to give them the tools and skills to become leaders in their community.

We are very thankful to all the individuals and partner organizations that helped make this tour a success, and we cannot wait to host our next tour over the summer!
